Backpacking Tips

How to Pack Your Backpack:
Before packing, spread everything you plan to take on the floor in front of you. Leave behind things that you may not really need but that you haven’t forgotten any essentials. If you are unsure of what to take, please use one of Adventures Around The World’s checklists. Imagine that your pack is made up of three zones, like those shown in the diagram:

Zone 1 – Put light items, like your sleeping bag, at the bottom of your pack.

Zone 2 Always pack your heavy items, such as food, water, climbing gear, or tent closest to your back. Use piece of fleece clothing to buffer your back from sharp cornered items.

Zone 3 – Place medium weight or bulkier items towards the top or down the front of your pack.

Your objective is to avoid having a top heavy pack, which will pull you backward, or a bottom heavy pack which will make you feel like you are being dragged down. Packing heavier items close to your center of gravity (the center of your back) will help you keep your balance and make the load feel more natural.

A few more tips:

Make sure the weight is evenly distributed between the left and right sides.

Place frequently used items in an easy access place, such as external pockets.

When hiking on easy terrain, pack heavier items then lighter up your back for better posture.

On harder terrain, put heavier items a little down for better balance.

Use stuff sacks that allow you to quickly pack and unpack your gear to find what you need.

Use your pots and hard metal stuff sacks to protect delicate items such as eggs, fruit, or vegetables.

Pack your food above your fuel bottle, in case of any leaks.

Always use your compression straps to bring your pack closer to your body and to keep everything in    place.

Backpacking Adventure Tips:

Once you have packed your backpack you are now ready to use Backpacking as an enjoyable way to experience nature and access remote terrain. Adventures Around The World offers the following tips to help you get started:

Study a map or guide to know the terrain you'll be hiking and estimate the time it will take to arrive at your destination. Pad your estimates with extra time to account for delays.

Obtain necessary permits and reserve campsites in advance, and check local regulations to avoid fines.

Know the area's weather patterns and accommodate for time of year. Always be prepared for the worst weather.

Remember, it's very easy to perspire, even in the winter, so dress appropriately in layers and be prepared for changing conditions, temperature changes at higher altitudes, and evenings. Avoid wearing jeans or cotton clothing. Wear polypropylene, wool or other breathable materials that wick moisture away and dry quickly.

Always pack rain gear.

Get to know your gear before heading out. Seam-seal the tent and familiarize yourself with its design and set-up.

Learn how to operate your stove so you're not caught in the dark or the rain trying to figure it out.

Know what you can carry and how long you can carry it without straining yourself. The pack shouldn't weigh more than 25 percent of your weight, so take only what you need.

Being prepared with your gear and surroundings will make your adventure all the more enjoyable and memorable.
