As the capital of Costa Rica and the primary arrival point for most tourists, San Jose and the Central Valley have a lot to offer visitors. Whether it’s the many shopping opportunities or a cultural tour throughout the city, explorations of this vibrant area are sure to mesmerize you. Nearly two-thirds of Costa Rica’s population live in this area. Opportunities abound both in the city and the surrounding hills to visit historical sites, vast tea gardens, active volcanoes, and tumbling tropical waterfalls. The rafting explosion in Costa Rica began near this diverse area, and the adventure and excitement of river trips down the Rio Pacuare, rated one of the ten best rivers in the world, keeps visitors coming back. Dinner can be enjoyed at a gourmet restaurant or at a local food stand, and accommodations range from exotic to luxurious.
TORTUGUERO AND THE NORTHERN CARIBBEAN
In this isolated and unspoiled part of Costa Rica, you can travel down remote rivers and view exotic and rare wildlife. The surrounding coastline has world-class fishing for Atlantic tarpon and snook. The Tortuguero National Park offers some of the best turtle watching in the world, and the remote resort accommodations will be an experience you will never forget.
PUERTO VIEJO AND THE SOUTHERN CARIBBEAN
This area of beautiful beaches and relaxation is highly influenced by the local Caribbean Islands. Food here has a decidedly Caribbean flair, and accommodations range from lonely stretches of perfect beaches to all-inclusive resorts.
DRAKE BAY AND THE OSO PENINSULA
Located on the Southwestern side of Costa Rica, this area provides killer surfing and unspoiled national parks for our adventurers. During mating season, it is possible to view dolphins and whales in the calm Golfo Dulce, and nearby Cano Island is one of the best places to enjoy snorkeling and diving in all of Costa Rica. For nature-oriented travelers, both day trips and overnight trips are available to beautiful Corcovado National Park. Accommodations here vary from amazing oceanfront resorts to forest bungalows that immerse you in the surrounding natural beauty.
MONTEVERDE AND ARENAL
This part of Costa Rica ranges from cloud-covered mountaintops to fiery volcanoes spitting lava down charred slopes. The Monteverde Cloud Forest reserve offers amazing bird watching opportunities surrounded by eco-friendly farms and socially conscious development. Across from the kite-surfing paradise of Lake Arenal is the active Arenal Volcano, which offers visitors the chance to see rivers of fire tumble down the slopes and to listen to the rumble of nature uninterrupted. Besides natural beauty, the mountains also offer the most exciting zip-line canopy tours in Costa Rica and utopian hot springs to soak all of your stress and worries away. Costa Rica Activities
SURFING
Costa Rica has some of the best surfing in Central America on both the Caribbean and the Pacific Coasts. Experts and beginners will enjoy the excellent surf breaks and beach vibe in these surfing communities. Depending on your itinerary, we will build in surf lessons and trips to meet your quest for the perfect wave.
WHITEWATER RAFTING
The Costa Rican topography and weather patterns create the perfect environment for exceptional rafting. There are rivers ranging from Class I and II scenic floats, to Class IV and V exciting and technical multi-day trips. We are also kayak friendly and can arrange a trip that meets any paddler’s ability level. We usually spend at least two days rafting on any given trip.
DIVING AND SNORKELING
There are great reefs and islands to snorkel and dive around in Costa Rica. Depending on the season and the ocean currents, we can arrange full-day, half-day and sunset adventures in multiple locations. Our favorites are near the Nicoya Peninsula, the Oso Peninsula, and parts of the Caribbean. The tropical fish are most appreciated when you are face to face with them cruising around the reef, or deep underwater on a diving adventure.
ZIP-LINE CANOPY TOURS AND CANYONING
These growing activities in Costa Rica are an adrenaline-filled way to fly through the sky above the rainforest or climb your way down a deep tropical gorge. Adventures Around the World uses only the most respected companies and the safest equipment to help both young and old experience these amazing activities. Imagine zipping along above the treetops at almost 40 miles per hour or rappelling through the warm mist of a waterfall.
HORSEBACK RIDING
Costa Rica has a rich history in ranching and using horses as transportation. You can still see horse-drawn carts in many of the more rural communities, and traveling by horse is preferred in many places. Opportunities range from beach excursions down the coastline to rugged mountain trail adventures, as well as transfers between certain destinations. We research our partner companies to make sure that you are getting the best treated horses that can get us to where we need to go.
SAILING AND FISHING
With endlessly beautiful coastline, the best way to see the beach is sometimes from a boat. We arrange both private and group sailing excursions for full-day, half-day, and sunset sailing adventures. Ocean fishing is also an amazing experience with record-setting marlins, tarpon and snook waiting to be hooked. Most of our trips pair together snorkeling with sailing or fishing.
HIKING AND CAMPING
Some of the most pristine areas of Costa Rica are only accessible by foot, including remote mountains, indigenous hill communities, community development projects, and isolated national parks and coastlines. Duration and difficulty varies by group, but there is nothing like voyaging into the jungle with only a guide and your equipment to truly see the old Costa Rica.
CULTURAL SIGHTS AND SOUNDS
We place emphasis on the immersion into Costa Rica’s deep history and ethnic diversity. As well as active and exciting activities, we always include incredible cultural sights and sounds. Adventures Around the World works hard to find unique activities to educate you on the people and places of Costa Rica. Whether it’s a guided tour around the historic sights of San Jose or an overnight adventure to a community development project, we make sure that all of our adventurers get to know Costa Rica.
BIRD AND WILDLIFE WATCHING
Many tropical birds and migratory birds call the lush forests, savannahs and coastline of Costa Rica home for at least part of the year. Parrots, toucans, resplendent quetzals and many more are viewable in many of our destinations. We always have a few pairs of binoculars and ID books with us on our trips, but some locations do have built-in birding outings. Depending on your interest and desires we customize your trip for a tropical birding experience.
OTHER EXCITING ACTIVITIES
Different regions of Costa Rica offer exciting opportunities for the adventurous traveler. Activities such as kite boarding and windsurfing, ATV excursions, mountain biking and many more await your arrival in Costa Rica with Adventures Around the World.
