Bhutan Where to Go

Thimpu

Thimpu

Perhaps the smallest capital in the world, Thimpu is truly a unique destination to discover. With no stoplights, white-gloved police take control and direct the traffic in the truly beautiful and exuberant city. Trashi Chho Dzong, a fortified monastery, is one of many exceptional dzongs in Bhutan. Walking through the gatekeepers to be met by a vast courtyard with sculptures, splendid architecture, and the whirr of prayer wheels captures a true Bhutanese experience. Browsing the weekend markets in Thimpu will bring insight into the customary wheeling and dealing of the village people. If you time your trip right your visit to Bhutan during any festival will only add to your unforgettable trip full of culture, dance, music and color.

Western Bhutan

Arriving in Paro, western Bhutan will bring a sense of idyllic serenity and awareness that you are truly in a different land. Vertical prayer flags flutter in the breeze and men dressed in a traditional gho (tunic) stroll past yellow-roofed shrines and wooden slate roofed houses. Remote valleys and sacred peaks dot the region for peaceful yet stimulating treks that will awaken your spirituality to the fullest. Hiking to Tiger’s Nest, Bhutan’s most famous sight, or making a pilgrimage to the Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most beautiful temples will intensify your adventure to a land much overlooked.

Central Bhutan

Driving through Bhutan is truly one of the best ways to see the exceptional land. There are fewer tourists after crossing the Black Mountains into the central countryside, and sights of fertile valleys, ancient dzongs, quaint villages, dwarf bamboo and shaggy yaks are frequent.
