In spite of growing into a bustling metropolis, it still retains its character and history—a beautiful fusion of yesteryears and modernity. The pink city, literally blushed pink when Prince Albert stepped on its soil in 1883. Jaipur is the only city in the world symbolizing the nine divisions of the universe through nine rectangular sectors subdividing it. Visit Amer Palace (the royal family's earlier residence), Hawa Mahal (multi-layered with a profusion of windows and stone screens), City Palace (the principal residence of the former ruling family and known for its stunning architecture) and Jantar Mantar (stone observatory raised in the 18th century by an astronomer King). Return back to hotel for overnight stay.
Day 16: Jaipur to Fatehpur Sikri to Agra (Drive 235 km). After breakfast, leave for Agra via Fatehpursikri, a city built between 1570 and 1585, during the reign of Emperor Akbar. The capital of the Mughal Empire was situated here, 40 kms west of Agra. Then, as suddenly and dramatically as this new city had been built, it was abandoned mainly due to water. Today it is a perfectly preserved example of Mughal architecture, which was at height during that era. Legend says that Akbar was without a male heir, and so he made a pilgrimage to this spot to see a saint, Shaikh Salim Chisti. The saint foretold the birth of Emperor Akbar's son, the future Emperor Jehangir. Akbar transfered his capital to Sikri and built a new and splendid city. Visit Jama Masjid or Dargarh Mosque, which is similar to the mosque in Mecca and is a beautiful building containing elements of Persian and Hindu reign. The main entrance is Buland Darwza (the Gate of Victory, constructed to commemorate Akbar's victory in Gujarat), Palace of Jodha Bai (north east of the mosque named after Jehangir's mother who was the daughter of the Maharaja of Amber). Here again, the architecture is a blend of styles with Hindu columns and Muslims cupolas, The palace of Christian Bride (close to Jodha Bai Palace) was used by Akbar Goan’s wife, Maryam, and at one time was gilded throughout, thus giving it the name, the Golden House. There are many other monuments that are artistically rich in details. Arrive into Agra late afternoon. In the afternoon, visit Agra Fort (built by the great Emperor Akbar in 1565 AD, which is a masterpiece of design and construction).
Day 17: Agra to Delhi (205 km) and return home. After breakfast, proceed for a tour of Taj Mahal (the world famous monument built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jehan in memory of his beloved wife, Queen Mumtaz Mahal who died while giving birth to their 14th child). The whole monument took approx. 22 years to be constructed, and it is believed that the main architect was maimed so that the drawings of the structure would not be forwarded to the any other person. Enjoy a tonga ride (horse pulled cart) from the Taj Mahal parking area to the entrance gate. Later, drive back to Delhi and transfer to the international airport to board a flight to an onward destination.
