Thailand When to Go

Traveling to Thailand is as easy as ever with help from Adventures Around the World. We handle the details so you can enjoy your vacation to the fullest.

Thailand Adventure Regions
BANGKOK
Bangkok is the most common arrival-point for tourists and offers limitless opportunities for the foreign visitor. Tucked around the spectacular high-rises, the city is full of temples, floating markets and excellent restaurants. Bangkok, known in Thai as “Krung Thep,” literally means City of Angels and provides a unique opportunity for travelers. Our adventures include taking a relaxing trip up the Chao Phraya, cruising through crowded and beguiling streets, and exploring cultural spots such as Chinatown and Khao San Road.

ISLANDS AND BEACHES OF SOUTHERN THAILAND
Thailand consists of a long peninsula ending in Malaysia. Both sides of Thailand harbor calm seas, beautiful beaches and a special love of life. On the Gulf of Thailand, beautiful beaches and access to the islands of Koh Tao, Koh Pha-Ngan, and Koh Samui are as close as two hours from Bangkok  On the Andaman Sea, there are many pristine coastal beach communities and islands, and the main islands off this coastline include Koh Lanta, Phuket, and Koh Phi-Phi Don. Andaman Coastal adventures include trips to the Simian Islands and the Surin Islands, both known as having some of the best diving in the world.

GULF OF THAILAND
This gorgeous coast is a great destination for the adventure traveler. The first island, Koh Tao, is a diving mecca with world-class dive sites and a relaxing vibe even in the bustling town. Koh Tao is also an excellent location for bouldering in the islands. Below Koh Tao is Koh Pha-Ngan, most famous for its monthly full moon parties and miles of incredible coastline and great diving. The largest island in this archipelago is Koh Samui, which has an airport and is a good destination for more westernized accommodations and activities.

ANDAMAN SEA
With emerald green water, craggy limestone coasts and islands rimmed by white sand beaches, it is easy to get lost in this paradise. On the mainland we travel through Krabi and out to Railay beach (Ao Nang) for world-class climbing on the beaches and coves. Travel to and from the peninsula requires long tail boats. The towering cliffs are a great place for sea kayaking. Two other spectacular islands include Koh Phi-Phi Don and Koh Phi-Phi Leh. One is picturesque with blinding white sand beaches and bungalows, and the other is a protected marine island that was the location of the filming of “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio. Diving is the main draw here, but local activities include Muy Thai (Thai Boxing matches), hiking and exploring. Phuket lies just to the North and via a ferry ride one can see a more developed island with nightclubs, dive shops and busy stretches of beach.

NORTHERN THAILAND
While the south is dominated by coastline, the north harbors the old kingdoms of Thailand, traditional villages and hill tribes. Chang Mai remains a great hub for visiting travelers with its rich history of ancient trade routes to Laos and Myanmar. Some of the other great villages such as Chang Rai, Pai, Mae Hong Song and Nan also offer great accommodations and activities. For those fascinated by the local ethnic minorities, cycling, mountain treks and rafting bring you into the rural areas. Working elephants wander the roads with their Mahouts, and many tours are available on the backs of these majestic animals. The famous “Golden Triangle,” or infamous opium-growing region of Southeast Asia, is located in the far north with day and multi-day tours.

CENTRAL THAILAND
With a rich history and beautiful surroundings, Central Thailand is becoming an increasingly popular destination. The former capital, Ayuthaya, provides some of the most impressive ruins in Thailand, and Kanchanaburi offers fascinating WWII history. Other great opportunities include local bike tours or visiting the Thailand-Myanmar border for a slice of Myanmar.

SOUTHEASTERN THAILAND
Southeastern Thailand and the northern part of the gulf is host to many European tourists, highly developed beach resort communities, as well as isolated beaches and stunning islands. Its proximity to Bangkok draws in many beach tourists. Great activities in this area include kite-surfing and diving. Farther towards Cambodia is the town of Trat and the islands of Ko Samet and Ko Chang. Ko Chang is located in the rainforest with elephant tours available. Ko Samet has a jumble of hotels and bars on its northern side with a largely undeveloped southern coast.

Thailand Activities

DIVING AND SNORKELING
Thailand truly comes alive below the waves. With two coastlines, countless islands, and warm tropical waters, there are limitless possibilities for diving and snorkeling. If you are new to diving or just interested in learning more, we offer open-water dive courses for all levels, as well as dive certification courses with professional dive companies so that you can learn safe diving. Our favorite locations are Koh Tao and Koh Phi Phi, but longer trips are available to the Simian Islands or the Surin Islands. Whether floating deep under the surface or gliding above the reefs, diving or snorkeling in Thailand is an unbeatable experience.

ROCK CLIMBING
The limestone topography of Thailand is a world-class climbing mecca, both inland and on the southern peninsula. Two climbing options include Chang Mai in the northern mountains and Krabi in the south. Krabi has been featured in many climbing magazines with hundreds of climbs available from novice to expert. Pair this with a beachfront location and plenty of adventure activities, and your group is sure to have a great experience. New destinations also include Koh Tao, which features excellent bouldering with low limestone rocks scattered throughout the island.

SEA KAYAKING
With so many islands and a coastline full of isolated coves and white sand beaches, sea kayaking has become very popular while staying in Thailand. Great day trips are available, both guided and unguided, along jagged coastlines, allowing you to explore beaches and caves along the way.

SAILING AND FISHING
The calm ocean and towering archipelagos in Thailand are incredible to explore from a boat. Whether you are sailing to a brilliant sunset or dropping a line to catch a big ocean fish, we arrange outings that will be exciting for everyone.

CULTURAL SIGHTS AND SOUNDS
Thailand is full of Wats (Temples) and monasteries. Religion permeates society with daily prayers, devout monks and unique hill tribes. Southeast Asia is a crossroads of many different cultures, each of which has maintained its identity and created a patchwork of incredible sights and sounds that we explore on every trip. The mountains in the north highlight small villages tied to their tribal past, the urban centers representing modern Thailand, and the beaches and islands of the south let you experience the relaxed tempo of this beautiful country.

BIRD AND WILDLIFE WATCHING
Thailand has a rich spectrum of birds and animal life. Elephant treks are a big draw in some areas, and riding on the back of this large land mammal truly helps one respect the size of this majestic creature. Over 1000 bird species have been identified in Thailand. We always have a few pairs of binoculars and ID books with us on any of our trips, but some locations do have built-in bird outings. Depending on your interest and desires, we can customize your trip for a tropical birding experience.

MOUNTAIN BIKING
As one of the newest adventure activities in Thailand, only a few outfitters are offering this experience. Guided trail biking adventures help you reach the rural parts of Thailand, giving you the slow tour of the jungles and villages along the way. Half-day to multi-day trips are available.

TREKKING /HIKING
Most trekking areas of Thailand are developed in the northern hills of the country. Traveling between towns and staying with locals is a beautiful way to experience the traditional hill tribes of Thailand. Routes vary from one to three days with local food, isolated lodges and incredible trails along ridgelines and through river valleys. Options are available no matter how you want to travel.

KITE SURFING
Imagine racing along the beach, surfing without a wave. One of the newest adventure activities, kite surfing is well established in Thailand, with arrow-straight beaches, steady wind, and world-class instructors. For beginners, we offer 4-day courses. For the experts, you get gorgeous beaches, quality equipment and jet-ski assisted transport from one end of the beach to the other.

OTHER EXCITING ACTIVITIES
Different regions of Thailand offer exciting opportunities for the adventurous traveler. Some of the activities we like to include on our trips are river and canal tours, temple tours, muy thai boxing, incredible shopping and local cuisine.

Thailand When to Go

Thailand is a tropical country located in Southeast Asia, and the best time to visit is between November and February. This is the main season for local festivals and holidays, as well as the season with the least rain and lowest temperatures. Depending of the destination of travel, the climate changes between the southern islands, beaches and the mountainous northern provinces. In general, hot season is from March to May when the temperatures get the most hot and humid. The rainy season is from June to October, with the months of July to October having the most rainfall.
