The Salmon River is the longest and largest river in the lower 48 states that is completely without dams. This is the last section of “The River of No Return” before it joins the Snake River on its journey to the Columbia and the Pacific Ocean. On this section of river, our trips last for four days and cover 56 miles. Along the way, we float through three of the Salmon River Canyons canyons—Cougar, Snow Hole and Blue.
6-Day Itinerary:
Day 1: Upon arrival in Lewiston, introductory tours of downtown Lewistown and Snake River provide the necessary information for the upcoming adventures. Optional activities include exploring Nez Perce National Park, hiking to ancient petroglyphs and visiting various historical sites with the assistance of an AAW private guide.
Day 2: Private transportation will take the rafters to the Salmon River at the best launch site for the skill level of the group. Rafting begins in Cougar Canyon and goes through scenic canyons, with breaks along the river beaches. AAW guides set up camp while the rafters enjoy relaxing by the river.
Day 3: Start off the morning with exploration around the campsite before returning to the river for Class III and IV whitewater adventures. Breaks along the river include hikes led by AAW guides in local favorite spots. Historic sites along the way include the pictographs form the Nez Perce and mining sites from the Chinese in the late 1800’s. Conclude the day at the peaceful campsite surrounded by good friends.
Day 4: Wake up to the sounds of the river and wildlife before returning to the rapids for another day of rafting. Once again, AAW guides will lead exploratory hikes and provide insight to the historical surroundings. As the last night on the river, join the guide for a final hike or simply enjoy the scenery while relaxing by the river.
Day 5: After a relaxing morning, the group returns to the river for a few final rapids before reaching the final take-out point at the confluence of the Salmon and Snake Rivers. The group will transport back to the campground in Lewiston for the final night of camping.
Day 6: Absorb the surrounding nature before the return drive to Bonners Ferry.
